Shades are elusive spirits of Darkness. They are formless and ephemeral, existing only in darkness and shadow. They proliferate in corners of the Seven Infernal Chambers of Malbolge and supply the souls of Danaij and Danaij’vai.

Outside of the Forsaken Land and Malbolge, Shades exist but rarely interact with other beings. Their nature tends to be neutral, though when incarnated into Danaij, they exert a corrupting influence that leads to indulgence in vices and selfish behaviors.

While the primary four elemental spirits (Slyph, Undine, Gnome, and Salamander) are commonly entreated by shamans and play a role in supporting witchcraft, Shades are largely unknown to most of these magic users, except for those in the Forsaken Land who have learned to employ them.
