Naclia is a young Fayl'Idayn ranger who leaves The Ardir in the company of her brother, Terin, on the Journey of Cooperation at age 125. She is a woman who tends to follow her whims and desires to the point of recklessness. Her relationship to Terin is especially close, as they are near in age, but their personalities tend to compliment each other as Terin provides Naclia a rein on her impulsivity while Naclia pushes Terin toward new experiences that he is otherwise wary of.

Background

Naclia was born in a small Fayl’Idayn community in the north-central Ardir. Her father, Firion L’Ayla, served in the ranger corps., following in the footsteps of both his parents. Naclia’s mother, Iloysia L’Tiatha, was the daughter of a prominent spiritualist leader and a craftsman. Iloysia had a desire for a large family, which was abnormal for the Fayl’Idayn, but Firion indulged her. Their first child was Terin, and ten years later, Naclia herself.

After Naclia, Firion was content with his son and daughter, but as Naclia grew up, Iloysia longed for a new baby. Firion had no desire to father more children, so Iloysia sought a second lover with his blessing. After several decades, Iloysia married her second husband, Raefis L'Narica, the son of a Fayl'Idayn ranger, Narica, and an Ochae'nafod of the Puma tribe who was eager to father children of his own. With the second marriage, Naclia and Terin moved into Raefis's old home to give their mother space with her new husband and Firion took and extended ranging mission. When Naclia was eighty and Terin ninety, their sister Eina L'Iloysia was born. Raefis and Iloysia raised her on their own for her early years, but when Firion returned, he readily slipped into a role as a secondary father. Three decades after Eina, Raefis was ready to be a parent again and Iloysia became pregnant with Reithas L'Iloysia. Firion was eventually charmed back into the role of father, and ten years later, Iloysia became pregnant again, but between her two husbands, she wasn't entirely certain who fathered her fifth child, Shaiya L'Iloysia.

With no other siblings born until they entered adulthood, Naclia and Terin were thick as thieves. While at first, the ten-year age gap was significant, Naclia adored her brother and Terin’s responsible nature bound him to watching out for her. As Naclia approached adulthood, she and Terin found a balance in each other. Terin, having been born under the Stag, an earth sign in the Idayn zodiac, displayed his sign’s traits of pragmatism, responsibility, and deliberation. Naclia, on the other hand, was born under the sign of the Hawk, an Air sign that has traits of adventurousness, determination, and capriciousness. While quite different from each other, Naclia and Terin tend to balance each other out. Terin helps Naclia keep both feet on the ground, while Naclia’s character opens Terin to new experiences and ideas. There is enough give and take in their relationship that the two are highly complementary and make a great team.

While Naclia and Terin were close, they were not the only peers they had. They shared their village with a small clan of Ochae’nafod, from the Odoco tribe. A girl, Holone, was near their age, though a little older than Terin. One of their neighbors was a woman named Anaiya who raised her son, Aiden, on her own. Aiden was four years younger than Naclia and was born to Anaiya from a short-lived affair with a half-human named Aiden Silvermoon. Born five years between Terin and Naclia was a boy named Elyon. As years passed, these five had their adventures and misadventures. Aiden developed an attraction to Naclia from an early age, while Naclia gradually grew attracted to Elyon. Terin himself nursed a crush on Holone for many years, as did Elyon. As Naclia matured, she found herself pining for Elyon to no avail, and when he rejected her, she turned to Aiden for comfort. He was her first kiss, but not long after, Naclia felt he was too clingy and rejected Aiden. Elyon, now feeling threatened by Aiden momentarily stealing Naclia’s affection, and going unnoticed by Holone, swooped in to give Naclia the love she craved. He was her first true lover, but their romance was short-lived. Holone confessed to Terin that she too loved Elyon and was heartbroken when he chose to pursue Naclia. Terin, despite his crush, conveyed the news to Naclia, who had not found her fling with Elyon to be what she hoped for, and thus, ended their romance. Years later, Elyon and Holone would marry. Meanwhile, Aiden still pined for Naclia, and from time to time, she considered him, but his behavior always pushed her away again.

All these youthful romances would be pushed to the background as Terin and Naclia decided their life path. Terin decided to follow their father’s footsteps and become a ranger, and Naclia followed as well. At first, Terin and his parents were concerned that she was copying him, and that she was more like their mother, but as she advanced in training, she proved that it was indeed a valid career choice for her character and talents. Aiden and Elyon followed as well. Elyon, as it aligned with his interests, and Aiden because he wanted to follow Naclia.

Despite their age gap, Naclia and Terin entered training at the same time and excelled. Their mentor, Sera L’Aranni, saw their complimentary nature and challenged them frequently—together and separately—until she was convinced that they made an ideal team. Rangers often work in pairs—sometimes solitary on limited reconnaissance missions, but ideally together. Elyon would later be matched with a male partner from a neighboring village, and Aiden with another girl from a neighboring community. When Naclia and Terin completed their training, their parents arranged rewards for them. Firion gave Terin, his first-born, the sword that had been passed down to him from his father, while Naclia was commissioned a brand-new sword (along with her favorite dress) that was sent from a Brech’mar community in the Perdrasers.

Once given their assignments, Terin and Naclia frequently patrolled the forests to the north of their community. Over the years, they had come in contact with a number of poachers of both wildlife and wood, whom were threatened and chased out of the forest with the combined strength of Terin’s skill with the sword and Naclia’s illusions and precise aim. They also encountered harmless foragers from Kosony, with whom they sometimes spoke and guided. Occasionally, hunters seeking to only hunt what they needed to feed their families were allowed to hunt, but as vegetarians, Naclia and Terin interacted very little with them as they found the consumption of meat distasteful. Despite their discomfort with it, they shared the forest with a number of Ochae’nafod tribes that were bound to predatory animals and enjoyed an omnivorous diet. Some peoples ate meat, and they had no say in their dietary choices, so long as the hunters did not threaten the populations of wildlife that kept the forest healthy.

Even though Terin and Naclia were close, there were times when both siblings craved their space—especially when it came to romance. On occasion, they would take solitary assignments after a disagreement, or when one of them became infatuated with someone they met. At one point, Aiden had come back into Naclia’s life after a romance with his ranging partner went sour. Terin, always suspicious of Aiden’s motivations toward his sister, while also respecting Naclia’s ability to make decisions for herself, took time away on an extended scouting trip to give Naclia her space. Aiden and Naclia had a brief affair in this period, but by time Terin returned, Naclia had turned away Aiden in frustration with his overwhelming affections.

Most recently was a solitary mission of Naclia’s when Terin had developed a romance with a woman named Feina from one of the neighboring villages. While Naclia had no objections, she opted to give Terin some space. While on her own, she ranged to the border of the forest with Kosony. There were still four years between her and the traditional Journey of Cooperation that took young Fayl’Idayn out into the world, but the temptation of visiting their human neighbors was strong. Elyon had just returned from his journey, and once he returned, he married Holone. It was at their wedding where he had regaled Naclia with stories of his adventures, sparking her own curiosity. Five years earlier, Terin had opted to postpone his journey until Naclia came of age so they could go together. While she was looking forward to having him with her, a part of her wanted to have the solitary adventures that Elyon had.

On a whim, Naclia left her post and snuck into a village across just across the border. There, she met a young knight named Talen Drecloud. He had a noble character, was very kind, and eager to get to know one of their neighbors to the south. In their brief time together, they developed a passionate romance, but Naclia only had a few days before she had to return home with her report on the border. When that time came, she bid Talen farewell, but underestimated the seriousness with which humans took intimacy. He allowed her to leave, but with a heavy heart.

Naclia never told Terin, or anyone else, about her human lover. While they openly discussed their romances within the forest, she feared the consequences of sneaking off and interacting with humans without the sanction of the elders. As she held this secret to her heart, she found Talen on her mind more than any other lover she had experienced. However, she knew she would likely never see him again, as she knew he was only assigned to serve in that little village for a year before resuming his duties elsewhere in the country. In a way, she found the fact that she would never seem him again as a relief, though a part of her also wanted to finish what they had started. Four years later, when she celebrated her one-hundred and twenty-fifth birthday, she was granted the opportunity to leave the forest with her brother on their Journey of Cooperation.
