Ungulate Tribes

Ungulates are generally considered to be placental mammals that walk on four legs and have hooves; largely grazing animals like deer, antelope, cattle, goats, horses, and other species. However, there are some oddities that are biologically more closely related to this group than others, such as whales. Ungulates are split into two main groups--Perissodactyla, which includes equines (horses, asses, zebras), tapirs, and rhinoceros; and Artiodactyla which includes camelids, pigs, hippopotamus, whales, and ruminants (antelope, deer, bovines).

The grazing animals are the most commonly bonded species amongst the Ochae'nafod as many of them are of a size easy to shift into and allow for quick escape. Many of these tribes exhibit wary and passive behavior, though there are exceptions to that rule. As there is such a large range of species, only a few specific tribes will have extensive information, but lists of appropriate species are available.

Perissodactyls

Ochae'nafod have bonded to equine and tapir species, but not to rhinoceros, as they are much too large.

Equine Tribes

All equines fall under the Equus genus, but only the tribe bonded to the true wild horse carry that name, while the other tribes carry the specific name. A small tribe maintains the remaining population of the ancestral wild horse in Kalesten, but none are bonded to domesticated horses or feral wild horses.

Tapirus

The Tapirus tribe is bonded to three closely related tapir species in South Kalesten. The iconic black and white Malayan tapir is not represented.

Artiodactyls

Artiodactyla represents a wide variety of species, the majority of those bonded with Ochae'nafod being ruminants like antelope, bovines, and deer. Cetaceans are also technically in this order and two species of river dolphin are bonded by Ochae'nafod.

Camelids

In Aserra, camelids are bonded to three current Ochae'nafod tribes; the Camelus tribe of west North Thiskel, and the Lama and Vicugna tribes of Central and South Kalesten. There are domesticated types of all camelids, but the Ochae'nafod are only bonded to wild species. As a note, only the "Bactrian" (two-humped) camel is represented by Ochae'nafod. The Dromedary would have been placed in Ageond, so their tribe would be extinct, but domesticated and feral dromedaries can be present in the Great Desert.

Suina

The Suina suborder represents pigs and there are two families--Suidae, which are Old World (Eurasia and Africa) boars and pig species; and Tayassuidae which are New World (Americas) peccaries. Peccaries are found in central and South Kalesten. The wild boar is found in North Thiskel and several African pig species are in South Thiskel. Species from SE Asia are not represented.

Tribe Name Species Region Size Notes

Potamochoerus Bushpig S. South Thiskel Average Dark auburn hair
Red River Hog W. South Thiskel Average Red hair, white hair tufts on ears
Phacochoerus Common Warthog W., SW., S., South Thiskel
Average Upturned tusks

Hippopotamidae

Hippopotamuses are a small family with only two members, but the larger common hippopotamus is too large to be bonded. There is a small tribe bonded to the pygmy hippopotamus, Choeropsis.

Cetacea

There are only two Ochae'nafod tribes bonded to cetacean species; the Inia and Lipotes. Inia are bonded to river dolphins found in South Thiskel and Lipotes are bonded to river dolphins in Qao-Baiji.

Ruminants

Ruminants are the most diverse suborder of Artidactyla, including antelope, deer, giraffe, bovines, goats, and many other species of animals that specialize in grazing and chew cud. For their variety, there are many Ochae'nafod tribes bonded to them.

Tragulidae

This small family contains the minute mouse deer or chevrotains, most of which are too small to be bonded to Ochae'nafod, except for the Hyemoschus tribe in the western jungles of South Thiskel bonded to the water chevrotain.

Giraffidae

The giraffe family is better known for its largest members for which it gets its name, but giraffes are far too large for the Ochae'nafod to bond. They are, however, bonded to the Okapi of the jungles of western South Thiskel.

Cervidae

Cervidae is the family of true deer. For simplicity's sake, the Moschidae family (musk deer) are shoe-horned in here. Most deer species from Europe and East Asia (Thiskel) and the Americas (Kalesten) are represented while other species would have been placed on Ageond.

While most deer species have a bonded Ochae'nafod tribe, reindeer or caribou are an exception. This is due to the fact that they are migratory and much of their range is over open tundra. The Ochae'nafod prefer bonding species that remain in one place in habitats that have cover where they can establish their settlements.

Bovidae

The largest group of ruminants includes cattle, antelope, goats, and sheep. Some of the largest species, primarily of buffalo, bison, and cattle, are too large to be bonded.

Bovinae

This tribe contains two groups--the Bovini, which include cattle, buffalo, and bison; and the Tragelaphini, which include several large spiral-horned antelope. The cattle species are all too large for the Ochae'nafod to bond, but they have bonded the antelope.
